Question: Is the free will of my immediate consciousness separate from my soul, like my soul's is distinct from our I AM? For instance, in many, many moments I have been so hopeless, and in some I have voted to not be. In others I have felt so sincere and convinced and eager about our spiritual destiny. Is my soul making more sense out of this than linear me is, or are its hands tied similar to the way my I AM's are tied by the free will of my soul? And the soul is the same through all its lifetime's, right?

Answer from Jesus:

This is a very intelligent question, and it is a question that is difficult to answer so that it can be understood by people who think in linear terms. If you study some of the many books on near-death experiences or people who have been regressed and have remembered how their souls planned their current embodiments, you will see that the totality of the soul is far more than the conscious awareness of most people. In other words, before you come into embodiment, you can look at the big picture of the evolution of your soul, and you can do so in a detached manner. Therefore you can make a very rational and detailed plan for what you want to accomplish in your next embodiment.

When the soul enters a physical body, it usually loses the memory of the big picture, meaning its total soul awareness. Some people can remember having certain experiences or memories as young children, but they are often forgotten later, as the soul becomes involved with daily living in the material universe. Only souls who have attained a high degree of spiritual maturity in past lifetimes will retain a high degree of soul awareness and memory. Yet most spiritual seekers will have a strong intuitive sense of where they want to go in life.

So one can say that when your soul enters the physical body, its sense of awareness and identity becomes far more limited than before the soul enters the body. Yet the conscious awareness is not actually separated from the soul; it is simply a smaller portion of the soul's total awareness. One might say that before the soul enters the body, it is standing on top of a house and enjoying the panoramic view. After it enters the body, the soul is looking at the view through a small window.

When you are born, the individuality and personality of your conscious awareness has many of the characteristics of your soul’s individuality, although it can to some degree be affected by inherited factors. Yet these factors were – within certain limits – chosen by your soul before coming into embodiment. As a baby, your free will is largely the free will of your soul, albeit with limited opportunities for expression.

As you grow up, your outer personality can be deeply affected by the circumstances you encounter. It is therefore possible that you can lose most of your soul awareness, and it is possible that the personality you develop in this lifetime can deviate to various degrees from the individuality of the soul. Therefore, you can gradually develop a free will that is potentially quite far removed from the choices made by your soul before you took embodiment.

Regardless of what happens to them, most mature souls will eventually discover the spiritual path, and the most immediate task on the path is to reestablish an intuitive connection to the totality of your soul. Your conscious mind might not attain the full awareness that your soul had before coming into embodiment. Yet all sincere spiritual seekers can quickly develop a strong intuitive sense of the goals that their souls wanted to accomplish in this lifetime. Through your intuition, you can also draw on your total soul awareness.

So when you discover the spiritual path, your first task is to realign your outer personality and your conscious free will with the broader awareness and deeper choices of your soul. Once you have brought your outer awareness and personality into alignment with the true individuality of your soul, you can then begin to build from there to fulfill your divine plan and express your God-given creativity.

Many spiritual seekers have experienced hopelessness, and the reason is that you are going through an experience or phase that causes you to move away from the fulfillment of your divine plan. The outer awareness is losing contact with the deeper choices of the soul. The outer awareness cannot understand why, yet the soul still experiences this as a pain that can be felt by your conscious mind. Likewise, when you feel sincere and eager it is because you are now in alignment with the deeper choices of your soul.

It is true that the broader awareness of the totality of your soul is making far more sense of your life than your conscious awareness. Yet as you bring your conscious awareness in contact with your soul, you can also make sense of your life with your conscious mind. This is the key to manifesting peace of mind and a true sense of happiness and fulfillment in life.

It is correct that it is the same soul that continues to reembody. However, the soul will hopefully evolve, although it can potentially fragment, as described elsewhere.
