35. Why you can never get away with anything

NOTE: This is an excerpt from the book The Least You Should Know About Life.

The karma you make with yourself will stay with you and affect you all the time, yet many people do not notice this effect because they have become numb to it, as one can become numb to pain. The karma you make with others will return to you according to certain cycles, and for a time it will seem like nothing is happening. The numbness and the cyclical return of karma is what makes it possible for people to deny the reality of karma because it seems like you can harm yourself or others and get away with it. One of the most persuasive illusions generated by the way the material universe works is that you can escape the consequences of your actions.

One of the primary psychological blocks that prevents people from accepting a spiritual outlook on life is that they do not want to accept full responsibility for their actions. They do not want to acknowledge that you can never get away with anything. As the Bible says, “God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Or as physicists put it, “Every action has an opposite and equally strong reaction.” There is no action without a reaction and thus no action without consequences.

Being a spiritually awakened person means that you accept responsibility for your past actions and beliefs. While this might at first seem like a burden, it is the only way to achieve spiritual growth and it is also incredibly empowering. Once you realize that your circumstances in life are to a very large degree shaped by your karma and beliefs from the past, you can begin to take action to resolve the self-destructive beliefs and neutralize the karma. Take note that karma from the past must cycle through the four levels of the material universe before it manifests as a physical event. Thus, if you neutralize the karma at the identity, mental or emotional level, you can avoid experiencing physical consequences.

Another very persuasive illusion in the material world is that you are powerless to rise above your past. Your ego wants you to believe that once you have made certain mistakes, you can never rise above them. Once you have sinned, you are doomed forever. Yet the central message of all true spiritual teachings is that there is nothing in the material realm that is permanent, and thus nothing in this world can affect you forever. Everything is energy, and the material world is made from energy of a lower vibration than the spiritual realm. This has two major consequences:

  • Nothing you do in this world can destroy your spiritual identity. Thus, you can never lose your potential to reclaim your spiritual identity. Even your conscious self cannot be permanently affected by anything in the material world. Your conscious self is what it thinks it is, but it can change its thinking at any moment. Even though you may have built a limited sense of identity over many lifetimes, you can rise above that sense of identity by purifying your four lower bodies of destructive beliefs.

  • Nothing in this world is permanent, meaning that any mistake you could possibly have made can be undone. The energies in the material world are lower than the energies in the spiritual world. Your mind can be the open door for a stream of spiritual energy to flow into the material world. When your conscious self invokes and directs such energy, it can transform or purify the misqualified energy you have created in this and past lifetimes. Thus, you can free yourself from both the karma you have made with others and the karma you have made with yourself. Even though you may have generated much negative karma in past lifetimes, you can transform it by using proper spiritual techniques, as will be explained later.

Take note that there is an enemy outside yourself who wants to control you and there is an enemy within – the ego – who wants to control you. The primary weapon used by both enemies is the belief that you cannot overcome your mistakes. Yet as has been seen, any mistake you make is the result of a destructive belief in one of your four lower bodies. And there is nothing in this world that can prevent your conscious self from dismissing the erroneous belief and replacing it with true knowledge. No force in this world can prevent you from changing your mind—unless you let it.

Your mistaken beliefs have caused you to generate imperfect energy, but energy can always be transformed into another form of energy. Denying this potential is simply denying the facts of life demonstrated by physical science. Thus, no force in this world can prevent you from transforming the negative energy—unless you let it.
